Before we travel too far down the line, what about such classic figures as Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka, Jimmie Rogers, Connie Francis, The Lettermen, The Brothers Four, Ferrante & Teischer, Ben E. King, Dionne Warwick, Sonny & Cher, The Mamas & The Papas, The Four Tops, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons and, most definitely, Gene Pitney? There will be those who will argue that some of the above are "country" or "pop", but I remember hearing their songs on my R & R stations and I think they ought to have a chance, too.
